Ramping Up Your Online Presence
January 2, 2008

According to ComScore, online spending rose 19% compared to this same time last year and hit a whopping $28 billion dollars, thanks to hordes of people sitting around in their pajamas and clicking the Buy button on their computer screen (I was one of them).

With the new year officially here, ramping up your online presence should be a top priority.  The Internet, as you know, isn't "just a fad that's going to go away".  (Can you actually believe I had a boss that said that? Obviously he's no longer my boss.)   There are 3 things you can do this month to begin building and evaluating your web site for the 2008 shopping seasons:
  1. Conduct surveys and follow up with your customers.  Send out email surveys asking people how they shop on your site, what changes need to be made, and what their buying experience was like.  Once you have that information, review your site and make the necessary changes, as well as highlight the good. (Do not stick it in a drawer and vow to get to it eventually).
  2. Follow up with your customer database and send thank you notes to those who shopped/visited your site.  Customer loyalty is a large component of your success in the coming months.  You don't have to handwrite them; send them a personalized email using campaign software.
  3. Speak to your customer base - the ones who are shopping online and have come to expect a high quality, easy-to-use site.  They're spoiled with interactive web sites that are meant for broadband access.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me.  That's what I'm here for.

Happy New Year.  May this be your most successful year yet.
