Is the economy really slowing down?
April 1, 2008

Every time I turn on the television, flip on the radio or open a magazine / newspaper, I hear or read about the recession we're in.  The economy is failing; the dollar has tanked; people are not buying anything; the the house market has crashed and another mega company hit the skids.  According to one report, we're about to hit the housing marketSecond Great Depression.  If I listened to everything I hear and read, I'd be too scared to ever buy another thing, nor would I ever leave my house (according to one report citing the increase in robbery rates).

Yet I'm sitting at Krankies, the coffee house I write/work at every day, and hundreds of people stream in and out buying coffees, food, and assortment of other products.  When I go shopping, the stores are packed and people are everywhere and they're carrying bags full of merchandise.  The lines at Whole Foods are consistently long and the stationary store that I frequent always has people purchasing invitations for events.  I am searching for the doom and gloom I am hearing about...I know it's got to be coming.

Are you experiencing a down turn in your business? How has the slow economy affected your business?  Are your customers buying into the media reports and spending less?  I want to hear your thoughts...

We have noticed that the store traffic has slowed, but online traffic has increased. I think the high gas prices are forcing people to rethink their errands, and instead they're relying on the Internet to do their shopping.

Our website has a lot of visitors, but they're not buying that much. Our store has the same amount of foot traffic as always.

We are a small furniture retailer and the housing crash has really affected us. Nobody is buying sets like they were last year. I don't know whether it's because they're scared or they're really financially in trouble.

Our web/store sales starting last June 2007 have been up every month 10-32%. A tennis specialty store we see business rise during hard times. 22 years experience tells that the spending continues, just on cheaper items. Tennis is relatively inexpensive, cheaper than traveling or big ticket items
