Sustainability Is Big Business - Are You Involved?
October 31, 2007
My college e-newsletter contained an article from Raleigh's newspaper, the
News & Observer, about combating global warming can help the local economy. The writer states that State. Rep Charles Thomas, an Asheville Republican, said the true solution to global warming is finding an unlimited supply of clean energy. "Whoever finds that, they are going to print money," Thomas said. "They will make Alaska and its economy with the pipeline look like a lemonade stand." Saving the environment is going to be very good business now and in the future, and it's the best new business trend going today.
There's been lots of rumblings (all good) and talks in the business community about how to not only help the planet, but how to capitalize on it. Whether it's starting a solar panel company, or an organic farm, or becoming an organic wine vineyard (with the vineyards hovering around 35 in this region, this is big business after tobacco), entrepreneurs and small business owners are thinking outside of their collective boxes.
Consumers are willing to pay more if they see something as fair-trade or organic (
Whole Foods proved this over and over again) and small businesses can learn from their business model. Caring about the community and the environment help people part with their money if they feel they're giving back, contributing, or helping someone. The national view is turning from "all about me" to "
all about we". This aids small business owners like yourself who care about the town you reside in and the people who visit your business.
So how do you get involved and help your business? Read, learn and then implement:
By making small changes, you can make big differences.
