Social Media: Hype or Hot Opportunity?

April 16, 2009
On April 8, 2009 Facebook not-so-quietly added their 200 millionth user.

To put that in perspective, consider this: As Silicon Alley Insider noted if Facebook were a country, it would be the fifth-largest in the world after China, India, the US and Indonesia.

Lest you think Facebook is for millenials without enough money (or sense) to buy your products and services, it's important to note that the fastest growing segment of users are people ages 26 to 44, and the US has the largest number of users than any other nation.

Twitter is on a similar trajectory. The microblogging service attracted 9.3 million U.S. unique visitors to its site in March, up 131% over February, according to comScore. That's more than 5 million new visitors than the site had in February.

Not sure social media is right for you? There's only one way to find out - test the waters. Follow these three simple tips to get started:
  1. 21 Days. They say it takes 21 days to form a new habit, and I would suggest it takes about that long to get a feel for these new online tools. You can spend a few minutes each morning over coffee as I do, or carve out a larger block of time on the weekend. Just commit to spending a minimum of 90 minutes each week  for at least three weeks before you write social media off as a frivoulous waste of time.

  2. Follow the Leader. Seek out social media consultants, people who have a similar business as you, experts in your industry, and other thought leaders you respect to watch how they employ social media to futher their business. You might be surprised by which people you actually enjoy following; I find that experts who sprinkle in a bit of news about their personal lives are the most enjoyable.

  3. Experiment. I am fascinated by how people respond differently to identical content on Facebook and Twitter. As I've said before, social media is about conversation, and I'm on a quest to better understand what ignites a passionate discussion in one medium or another.
One of my current theories is that since I know my Facebook friends better than my Twitter followers, the Facebook conversations tend to be more personal.

I'm curious to learn what patterns you've seen online - please share! And of course I encourage you to join me in the giant social media experiment on Twitter and Facebook.

Great article - thanks.
I see the Twitter/Facebook user differences the same as you. Facebook being more visual and grouping based, people do it with others they know. While Twitter is all about short blasts of words that are better suited for mobile access... while standing in line or winding down. I have noticed individuals doing much more marketing to followers on Twitter, while Facebook marketing is done by applications. Facebook friends are smaller groups that each have more than a face avatar so it is too personal to market via short links - your friends will call foul.
As with any technology, there are the exceptions. The Guy Ks of the world get away with huge following in both worlds and gets away with a marketing push in every other post.
Enjoy readying your posts, keep up the fine work!

Great article - Social media is definitely a hot opportunity. I have found Twitter to be invaluable and have managed to build some very good relationships there. FaceBook is more "personal" but still very effective. Each company just needs to try the different apps out there and see what works for them - if time is an issue hire a consultant to make it happen :-) Social Media is a gold mine that you want to be part of!

Can I say both? It seems to me that social media presents some great opportunities and the possibilities are wide open, but that making effective use of them requires some knowledge of both the intended audience and the network in question--the differences you point out above are just the beginning. I think social media is an opportunity but needs to be a planned tactic. Don't just tack on social media because it's a "hot" item right now. Think about what you are trying to achieve and view social media tools as a way to reach your objective.

Also, realize you're not too late to the party and you'll never know everything. Learn from others who've been at the party a little longer than you and help a newcomer adjust to the setting.

Great comments from Kalene, Tiffany, Kimberly and Gar. I've been using the new version of TweetDeck which lets you choose which tweets also update your Facebook status. That's helpilng me turn down the noice a bit on Facebook while keeping up the chatter on Twitter. I keep telling everyone, just tinker - you can't comment on the swimmers unless you're in the pool!

Sima - Like the 3 simple tips. I attended an event on social media this week and if the presenter had the breakdown you presented... I think a lot of people in the audience would have benefited.

Recently, I have been utilizing Facebook to promote myself and my company. I find the 'Notes' tab a great place to upload my pic of the day (random thoughts from hot dogs to architecture, some of my paintings, and recent work). I find the FB photos draw more comments than a simple tweet or status that essentially says "

Great observation Sima. Facebook (FB) definitely provides a more personal exchange for users. Adults especially find it easier and more engaging to consolidate interacting with family, friends, associates via FB. Twitter on the other hand functions like MySpace. It does not provide the same level of personal interaction as FB. The difference between social networking sites is the audience: friend (personal space), follower (business/social space) and fan (ego).

Sima Dahl, Thanks, this is very informative, I love the stats. I have been in sales and marketing for over 30 years in the Real Estate industry and I find that marketing techniques are changing so rapidly now. There is so much to learn as to how our new buyers receive and absorb their decision-making information. I find this all so very exciting. I find that with things being slower now, I am taking that extra time to learn. I have designed my own web-site and I have learned to make video movies of my new homes. There is something new everyday. Where as I had always thought that most of these social sites were just for the teeny boppers, I now have my own Face-book, My Space, Twitter, U-Tube and Linked-in accounts. I am trying to track and see if I can really drive people to my web-site and ultimately to become a new home buyer. We builders and Realtors can no longer sit back and wait for the client to appear at our model home. I find that I now have to be aggressive and market outside of Florida, throughout the states and even take the opportunities to market overseas. Thanks again. Today is the Day, Now is the Time to Buy. Thanks. www.RobertLNewman.com
