5 Features Your Web Site Should Have
October 23, 2007

A successful retail web site contains information that keeps visitors reading, browsing, and interacting.  The more someone stays on a site, the more likely they are to buy, return, and tell others.  [In site metrics, you can judge how well your site is performing by looking at the page views and seeing how long they stay on each page before jumping off.]

With the holiday season heating up, customers are starting to shop and create their gift lists or wish lists.  You know you need to decorate your site, offer discounts, and other tips to entice them to buy, but what about keeping them as repeat, satisfied customers once the season is over?

Here are 5 easy features to incorporate on your web site during the holiday season and beyond:

  1. Tell them what's popular and how to shop.  One example is by Only She, a local boutique in Chicago that lists items that every woman might need in her wardrobe. This helps the man in her life, someone else who is buying for her, or the woman herself.  Oh, it says she needs a nice dress...
  2. Tell your customers what to expect when they shop with you.  Only She lists in their personal service what they offer, including sizing, complimentary gift wrapping and personal shopping.  During the hurried holiday season, these are good items to list.
  3. Offer gift cards.  The saying is 60% are actually redeemed for the full amount, and of those, more money is spent in addition to the value of the card once the recipient starts shopping. For the discriminate shopper, 2Modern offers different monetary values on their web site for a wider appeal.
  4. Shop by category.  When people get overwhelmed, as many do during the holiday season, having gifts pointed out to them is the fastest way to earn a sale.  2Modern shows gifts by category: shop by recipient, shop by occasion or shop by price.  Minimal amount of creative gift-giving brain power is needed on my behalf, so I bookmarked this site for future use.
  5. List your sales and promotions on your homepage [and then throughout every page since you never know where they will enter your site]. People love sales, and they love saving money whenever and wherever they can.
