Insurance Agents vs. Brokers?
April 9, 2007

Should you use an insurance agent or a broker? What's the difference? An insurance agent usually sells for one carrier / company (State Farm agent, Nationwide agent, etc.), writes policies through them and provides cost-saving package deals.

A broker shops around for the best coverage for the best price with multiple insurance companies, and can obtain hard to get special coverage if necessary.

When selecting an insurer, I recommend speaking with your personal insurance agent or broker to see if they're experienced in providing business coverage. After speaking with them, talk to other business owners to see who they use and who they recommend. Then check with your Chamber of Commerce to see if there are any complaints. Agent and broker's services are usually free. If a fee is added, I suggest finding someone else to use.
