What's a Widget? A Guide to Social Media Terminology
February 28, 2009
In the world of social media, it seems as though each new technology or tool requires its own lexicon. A year ago I had no idea what a
hashtag was, how to
tweet, and never used the word friend as a verb, but that was before I stared
friending people on Facebook.
As a marketer, business owner and networker, it's important that I keep up on trends and tools that may be useful to me, my clients and my peers and I suspect you feel the same. At least twice a week someone asks me for advice on how to get more out of
LinkedIn or for tips on trying out
Twitter. Just last week, my colleague Suze Bragg posted a great article on leveraging
Facebook for Business.
Glossaries and Guides
If you're like me and struggling to keep up with the new jargon, consider these handy glossaries to all the latest technologies and terms.
- A Social Media Glossary. A short, easily digestible list from Geoff Livingston, author of the book Now is Gone: A Primer on New Media for Entrepreneurs and Executives
- The A to Z of Social Media. This list is longer and therefore a bit more daunting, but also more complete.
- The Glossary of Blogging and Social Media Terms. I particularly like this list. Its author Mike Sansone understands that the point off all these new-fangled web tools is to start two-way conversation with your customers.
Keeping up with the times requires a commitment on our part to be willing to learn, and I look forward to sharing that journey with you.
