Is Your Target Market on Facebook & MySpace?
December 11, 2007

When Facebook opened up their site to people of all ages, it took over the number one spot that MySpace once occupied.  Today, it's a networking tool that is used like LinkedIn, and it's where people go to find out what others are doing, buying, and thinking.  Both Facebook and MySpace accept advertising on their sites and many online retailers built their own pages to help spread their branding message. I suggest businesses to use both of these, as well as LinkedIn, to help spread their branding with no money (building a page and linking themselves).  To gain more exposure, buying advertising is a great way to tell people you exist.

Advertising on Facebook:
They make it easy for non-techies to create a branded page by walking you through each step.  You have two options:  create a targeted ad ($$) or create a page (free).  Different functions they offer are:

  1. Social Ads
  2. Facebook Beacon
  3. Facebook Platform
  4. Pages
  5. Insights (demographics)
  6. Polls

Retail stores that have pages (besides the obvious ones like Starbucks, McDonalds, etc.)

  • Mallicious
  • Handicrafts of Vietnam
  • Martha Stewart

Getting started with Facebook:
Getting started with MySpace (not quite as business-friendly when creating a page):
  • Log onto Myspace
  • Once you've created & populated a page, join a group for your fans (example: Fashion & Style)
  • Invite people to become your friends
