6 steps to getting media coverage for your business
June 19, 2008

Media coverage is one of the best forms of advertising; with the added bonus of it being free.  As a media professional myself,  here are 6 steps I recommend:

1.  Write press releases often.  Here are some tips on how to write a good press release.

2.  Join PR newswire and BusinessWire so your press releases are sent to the media (this is an additional cost, but ensures your releases are submitted to every news source).

3.  Compile a database of writers in your industry and email them a copy personally.  This helps establish a relationship between you and the media source and you can grant exclusive rights before a press release hits the wire.

4.  Post your press releases on your website - please make sure they're not PDF attachments.  Many writers find it annoying to have to download and-or save it to their computer first.

5.  Keep an archive section of your past press releases on your website.  This way, writers can find out information about your company and the dates events/product launches happened.

6.  Ensure your website contains--in a prominent place--how your business solves the solution for your customers.  If the writer has to hunt for the information on your site, you've lost them.  Remember that you need to sell solutions, not products right off the bat.
