Bylined Articles: 5 Steps For Placement
May 25, 2009
Earlier we talked about the power of Article Marketing to elevate your personal or business brand and ultimately drive sales. Here we discuss 5 steps to finding the best media outlet for your article:
1. Consider all media outlets
Don't limit yourself to print magazines. Many ezines, websites and blog sites accept bylined submissions too. A great way to get started is ask your customers and prospects what they frequently read.
2. Include the trades
Trade journals frequently accept article submissions and give you instant credit as a thought-leader in your indsutry. If you're not sure you have a complete list, go to your local library and flip through a copy of Bacon's Magazine Directory.
3. Check the editorial calandar
Do they publish weekly or montly, and how far in advance of that date do they need your content? Make sure you can hit their deadlines. Also what type of topics are they covering? Pegging your pitch to their planned editorial increases your odds of successful placement.
4. Check the circulation
If the circulation is very high, the publication may not accepted guest authors; if it's too low you may not be reaching as many people. Shoot for the highest circulation posisible and work your way down.
5. Ask the Editor
If the publication's website doesn't indicate whether or not they accept bylined articles, just ask. Be sure to inquire about:
- Length of article
- Headshot requirements
- Ability to reuse, repurpose or reprint content
Up next, how to use article submission engines and other tools to place your article. Have a specific question about Article Marketing? Post it here or send me an email.
