Alarm Systems Cracked!
June 13, 2007

Security alarm systems are a must have in the retail industry. Not only do most insurance companies require security alarm systems, but also, the added benefit of feeling safe and secure allows you to sleep well at night.

I’m learning about alarms and alarm systems and came across a couple interesting finds with scenarios to help understand the benefits. I hope they help. We can’t run a business without our merchandise but I wouldn’t risk my life to save my goods…that’s what insurance is for.

The Burglar Waits For You:
You set the alarm at 7pm and walk out of your store. A burglar waits around the corner. He puts a gun to your head and makes you unlock the door and disarm the alarm. You forget your other code to set off the silent alarm, which would dispatch the police, instead you do as he says and disarm the alarm with your regular pass code. Now inside, the burglar takes you to the back of the store to unlock your safe. There is the possibility of the burglar making you open the safe and then him shooting you? How do you get word to the police?

  • I just learned of something new that most UL alarm companies (ADT, Priority One, and Sonitrol) can provide but will not offer unless you ask for it. You can have a separate keypad for your safe hidden in the store in a closet or your office. The alarm company programs it so that if you were to open your safe or unlock an area after hours (hours that you specify) a silent alarm is triggered.

 Snatch and Grab:
During business hours, the alarm is off. An armed burglar comes in and breaks display cases, glass showcases, or the window cases. You and your staff are too scared to hit the panic button.

  • Sonitrol offers glass detectors with an audio system built in that are placed on your ceiling. They detect the frequency that breaking glass gives off. The detectors send a silent alarm to the dispatch and the audio built-in allows the police to hear any voices so to better handle the situation.

If anyone is thinking of using ADT Alarm I suggest you do not. They are the worst in customer service and they want to charge you each time they come out to do anything ($153 an hour)!! If something goes wrong with your system they will come out but will charge you. I have been a customer for over 20 years and my alarm system does not work well, but each time I complain, I have to threaten to fire them before I get the needed maintenance free of charge. Getting to someone to talk to who can help is the worst!! Do not used ADT -- I suggest Brinks!

Did you know that ADT uses Ademco Security products? Ademco products are not propriety, therefore you can use the same brain but switch to another company. I know Sonitrol's equipment is propriety. I chose Priority One Security for the same reason that they too use Ademco so if I have a problem or end up disliking the company I could switch without pulling out our entire alarm system.

I could be wrong but I believe that if you search deep enough you will find that in most places Brinks and ADT are actually very close relatives. You can indeed switch to a better company when you''re not satisfied especially if you have an Ademco product, at least in most cases. If I can''t switch someone out, then I''ll provide a Free basic system. Feel free to check out my site burglaralarmsfree.com.
