Going the "Extra Inch"

The era of “Experience Shopping” is upon us. Stores that recognize the phenomenon are designed to put a piece of merchandise into customers’ hands and teach them how to use it; offering a more personalized experience that is better and easier.

So, how do you create the “shopping experience” in your store? Generating a positive shopping experience isn’t rocket science. Mostly, it’s about attention to details and about showing that you care.

The “shopping experience, can be as simple as doing the following:

  • Taking the extra two seconds to call a customer by his/her name.
  • Producing a friendly smile.
  • Keeping a cleaner bathroom.
  • Playing cartoons on Saturday morning while mothers shop for clothes, jewelry, or home goods.
  • Friendlier salespeople.
  • Having trendy music in the background.
  • Allowing for more couches to sit.
  • Being able to touch the product.
  • Being served a warm or cool beverage while viewing merchandise.
  • Remembering a customer’s name when they come back.
  • Being treated like a regular, even when you aren’t.

I admit it. I’m a demanding consumer. But, aren’t we all? We want everything better, faster, easier, and more personalized than ever before. We want to feel like we’re important to the companies we do business with. So, why not make your customer’s feel that way by offering them an experience unique to your store.
