Employee Orientation

May 15, 2008

I’ve seen most new employee turnover occurring within the first few weeks, and I was able to trace that back to the way they were-or were not-oriented. New employees are scared—they are coming into a new environment, meeting new people, and are not sure how they will be accepted. Employers can ease the transition and take advantage of the opportunity to get the relationship off to a good start. To get your new hire off to a great start consider acclimating them to their new environment with these simple steps:

  1. Complete Necessary Paperwork
    • Personal data sheet so you will have the information necessary on emergency contacts, home address and telephone number, social security number, etc.
    • W-4 Form for payroll withholding
  1. Review Practices and Procedures
    • Hours of work and attendance/tardiness policy
    • Pay period
    • Overtime rules
    • Parking arrangements
  1. Discuss Policies
    • Standard operating procedures manual
