Great Talent for Less
April 8, 2008

Are you trying to keep you payroll expenses down, but in need of high-quality employees? Consider these strategies:

  1. If you have a college nearby, place an ad offering an internship to graduate students and upper-level undergrads.
  2. Keep an eye out for stay-at-home moms. There are many smart women who’ve left their corporate executive positions to start a family or be closer to their children. When the kids grow-up, these empty nesters are on the prowl for something to do and can make excellent part and full-time employees.
  3. Investigate employee leasing and temporary help services.
  4. Get referrals from employees. Don’t be afraid to hire relatives of good workers. At out FL store we have two sisters working for us (the elder sister recommended her younger sister)—they had a great working relationship and actually tag teamed when it came to selling exclusive designer pieces.

Please don't use and abuse interns though, and pay is nice! In college I had some great paying internships and some non-paying internships and when you're on a college budget... it's a lot easier to give more time and talent to those who offer some form of compensation over those who don't!
