How to Look Professional Even When You’re Running Your Business Out of the Home
June 1, 2007

Running a business out of the home has become more and more accepted, yet some still question the credibility of the business. A businesses image is an important part of marketing and can be especially important for a business based out of your own home. Think of your home-based business as if you were opening a business down the street in a local strip center. Start building a professional image right from the start.

Here are a few suggestions to maintaining a professional image while running the business from home:

  1. Make sure to create professional business cards as well as letterhead, envelopes, and a logo.
  2. Use high quality materials. Just because your business is being run out of the home doesn’t mean sacrificing on the use of professional paper for business cards, brochures, and pamphlets. In addition, don’t forgo the professional graphics and imagery needed to promote and announce your business to the world. Appearance is critical to establishing credibility.
  3. If you meet with clients at your home based office, make sure it conveys a professional image—this means no kids toys on the floor but instead keeping it neat and separate from family activities can help to create a home office that is dressed for success.
  4. Purchase a separate line for the business. Don’t use the home phone for incoming customer calls. Also, be sure to install a quality answering machine or voicemail system.
