I’ve hired all sorts of salespeople for my jewelry store. One’s with gemology credentials to folks with no industry experience at all. I’ve learned my store can live and die by the quality of my sales force. After terminating many gemologists I had to sit and really rethink what kind of salespeople would be best for my store. I starting looking for people not who were necessarily book smart—meaning they had a bunch of gemology diplomas but instead people who embodied these particular characteristics:
Highly motivated
Eager to learn
Self-confident
Persistent
Good listeners
People whom embodied these characteristics were easy to train and have sold my products above and beyond someone with a bunch of diplomas.
