Who's Talking About You Online?
May 4, 2007

Today on the internet, there are thousands of reviews on small businesses that range from restaurants to retail stores, and even pet sitters. More and more consumers are searching for positive referrals before they use a product or service. I always check other customer’s reviews on even things like sheets on Overstock.Com and electronics on Buy.Com. To take advantage of this growing craze, you need to get the word out about what your business sells, provides, or does and utilize your existing customers. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  1. Offer a blog on your website. Present a page, forum, comment box, or blog where your existing customers can talk about the product or service they purchased. For example, check out the 196 comments on the daily Woot product.
  2. Make sure you’re listed. Get your business listed in major search engines and online directories, such as Google Maps, Local Yahoo, City Search, City Guide, Local Live and AOL's City Guide. In most cases, getting your business listed is as simple as filling out a free online form.
  3. Are people buzzing about your company? To determine what others are saying about your business, start by going online to a search engine and searching your businesses name.
  4. Spread the word. Create your own buzz by encouraging your customers to go online and write a review about your business and/or service. Send out an email to customers a few days after they receive the product in the mail and ask them to write a review to help others determine if your product or service is right for them. This will help to market yourself through your satisfied customers.
