Is Your Subject Line Making a Good First Impression?
January 18, 2008

Think about all of those e-mails you’re probably getting on a daily basis with subjects like:

”MAKE $100,000 A YEAR RIGHT FROM HOME GUARANTEED!”
”NEWSLETTER”

“THIS IS NOT SPAM!”

How do you know these kinds of emails are getting read? Do you even open these e-mails? I sure don’t! The subject line makes it obvious if the e-mail is spam or not, if it’s from someone you don’t know, or if it doesn’t offer a clear benefit that makes you want to read it.

The subject line is the first impression; you never get a chance to make a second one—so to get your email noticed, the subject line should:

  1. Inform
  2. Intrigue
  3. Call to Action

Here are a few more tips to make your subject line powerful and compelling:

  1. Try being a tease. Clever subject lines can be enticing. When it’s done right, a reader’s curiosity is piqued. They want to know more—and they’ll open your e-mail.
  2. Be straight forward. Often, what works best is to say exactly what you want your reader to know. Examples of this straightforward approach are, “Sale on all shoes this weekend.”
  3. Make sure the subject line is complete. Many spam filters catch e-mails without a subject line. People also use the subject line to sort, prioritize, and file e-mails, so make sure the subject line is descriptive enough to help them.
  4. Personalize the subject line. The more you can make each contact feel you're speaking directly to them, the more effective your communication will be.
