The Least Favorite Part of the Job
March 29, 2007

No one enjoys having to fire an employee, but sometimes you have no choice. The fate of the company is in your hands so here’s how to do it right.

STEP 1: Make sure your documentation ducks are in a row before the meeting. Document the entire conversation and have all the necessary paperwork with you, such as previous performance reviews, probationary warnings or other relevant personnel material.

STEP 2: Get right to the point. The employee’s fate has been decided, so just say it.

STEP 3: Decide the details of the employee’s departure before you talk with him/her. How long will he/she have to clear out? Does he/she have company files, a laptop, passwords to voicemail or the POS?

STEP 4: Offer whatever assistance your company provides in the way of outplacement, counseling or other services, no matter how unfriendly the parting.

STEP 5: Fire on a Friday. Come Monday; send out a simple e-mail to the staff. Then, drop it.
