Understanding Your Own Strengths and Weaknesses
April 20, 2007
I am a young entrepreneur, expanding my parent’s business. I see my parent’s way of doing business as a way for them to coast to retirement, not a business model to blaze a career path for my future. I’ve taken everything upon myself…designing the store layout, taking the plans to bid to contractors, lighting, security system, phone system, safes, etc. I’ve had to take a step back to analyze my own strengths and weaknesses, as many entrepreneurs do.
What skills come to you most naturally? Which tasks do you avoid doing because you don’t enjoy them or because they frustrate you?
Having a good understanding of your own strengths and weaknesses will help you to develop a team of people who can fill in those gaps. Whether they are family (my mom has been helping me everyday with Guliani’s new store’s layout), partners, or staff members—with varying skill sets and experience levels they can help to balance yours and set your business up for success. Besides lightening your workload, taking the help from others will help to challenge you in the areas you are weak, help the company to succeed in areas that have been stunting its growth, and ultimately deliver the best solutions to keep those customers coming back.
