Do You Caliper Your Employees?
February 27, 2008

I was at an industry owner’s forum last week where fourteen of us were invited to talk about our businesses. Across the board we all wanted to discuss how to find and keep good employees. Each one of us is a family owned business (all jewelry store owners) and none of us runs our business corporate-like. We are on floor with our sales people—and most of our stores have pretty intimate settings.

Unlike the others, many of the owners realized they had never interviewed for a job before. They grew up in the business and stayed in the business; therefore the dilemma of finding and keeping good people was even harder for them because they didn’t know how to effectively and efficiently interview.

Someone from the group mentioned Caliper. Caliper is a 40-year old global human resources consulting and assessment firm that has advised more than 25,000 companies on hiring, developing, team building and organizational concerns. Caliper starts out by getting to know you and your firm, including your particular management approach and the requirements of your key positions including the qualities needed for success in your environment. Then Caliper develops targeted interview questions for each of your key positions to help you delve below surface impressions. After each employee is interview they are then callipered. After the test, Caliper will let you know if that particular new hire is good for the position they have applied for. Caliper will list reservations if any based on the employees answers and will also list positions they would be better suited for.

Have you callipered your employees? I have never used Caliper before and I don’t know the exact costs. I hear it is about $200 per person and the test takes about 45 minutes or so.
