Can Blogging Help to Increase Business?
August 15, 2007
A blog is short for Web log, a sort of online journal. While personal blogs are popular, can you use a blog for your business? Bill Gates thinks so—in his keynote speech at Microsoft’s CEO Summit, Mr. Bill Gates made a point of saying, “Although blogs started in the technical community and have come to be a broader social phenomenon, businesses can use them too.” Pointing out that blogs could be a good way for firms to tell customers, staff, and partners what they are doing.
Blogs are the most explosive outbreak in the information world since the Internet itself. And they’re going to shake up just about every business—including yours. It doesn't matter whether you’re shipping toilet paper, world’s famous hot sauce, or videos of Paris Hilton going to jail, blogs are a phenomenon that you cannot ignore, postpone, or delegate.
BusinessWeek states there are some 9 million blogs out there, with 40,000 new ones popping up each day. Therefore, the new ones that pop up every day could be talking about your business, engaging your customers, or leaking company information.
So, how can a small business use a blog?
- To improve your company’s image, product, or service. Because blogs linger on the Web forever and aren’t private customers don’t hesitate when it comes to good and bad reviews. Take a look at any site these days—they all offer reviews of products, it can help to attract more customers.
- To create strong personal connections between customers who seek out your product or service. They can share thoughts and reviews of what they liked most or what might suit their needs better—engaging them only helps to increase sales of your products.
- To develop a following. If you’re an expert in a specific field, it’s possible your blog will develop a following of devoted readers and customers.
Email has carried on billions of conversations, but those exchanges were private. Blogs are different—they evolve with every posting, each one linked to a moment, allowing us to know what the world is thinking about, minute by minute. Because most blogs are open to the world—as bloggers read each others, they can comment, and link from one page to the next, creating a global conversation—a conservation that could be about your business so why not say start the conversation yourself.
