Are You a Member of a Business Group?
January 8, 2008

I opened a new business last October—and we’ve been doing pretty well so far. I think it’s just a matter of time before we can turn around some more business. I find it helpful to share problems, new ideas, and to give and take suggestions from my friends and parents who also own high-end jewelry stores. I also thought about joining a business group. Joining business organizations or networking groups lets you interact with like-minded people who can be invaluable sources of information and support—and could increase the success of your business.

I have found when you work for someone else, you often have the opportunity to be mentored—but when you work for yourself, I find it’s easy to make a wrong decision that could jeopardize the business. I find myself having to constantly make decisions (some which I don’t have the appropriate expertise for) but being the owner I have to lead. It’s a balancing act—that constantly keeps me on my toes—From being responsible of my employees, scary financial situations, and keeping customers coming in and back to the store.

Are you a member of a business group? Have you thought about joining a business group? Do you find it helpful?
