Understanding Telemarketing Laws
August 31, 2008

Most people have experienced that annoying ring of the phone just as dinner is put on the table. When you answer, you find it’s not a call from a friend or family member, or even from work. It’s someone calling to sell you something—a telemarketer. In 1991 Congress passed an Act granting consumers certain rights to defend themselves against unwanted telemarketing calls. If you telemarket, make sure you understand and follow federal law. There are certain activities you must avoid, including calling a consumer's residence before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m.; calling consumers who have requested they not be called (telemarketers must keep “do not call” lists of people who have asked not to receive calls).
