Why Small Business Should Encrypt Their Emails?
August 14, 2008

Most people do not have anything to hide. But still, you should lock the doors to your house and car, too, even though you have nothing to hide. The reason that we lock our homes is to keep people out who shouldn't be there, and that's the same reason why you should encrypt your email.

Your private email may not be so private. Unprotected messages and file attachments (pictures, documents, videos, etc) may as well be printed on a postcard as they pass through the internet. Many news accounts have documented instances of email messages being intercepted, sometimes with serious consequences.

PGP, which stands for “pretty good privacy,” is the most common form of e-mail encryption. PGP encrypts e-mails when they are sent and decrypts when the information has reached its intended recipient. Make sure your e-mail clients supports PGP and keep your security key in a location where it cannot be accessed by anyone else.
