Pandora Jewelry Correction

November 23, 2007

On November 2nd I wrote a blog titled, Manufacturers/Designers Opening Their Own Retail Stores, and mentioned the opening of Pandora Jewelry across from my new store in Charlotte, NC. I was under the impression it was Pandora’s own retail location, but just found these retail locations are owned by independent retailers, and that Pandora is continuing to offer this opportunity to their retailers and in the future to any other retailer who is interested.

So, to Pandora—is this a franchise or are they totally independent? Do these independent retailers have to contribute profits from their sales to Pandora? Do other local independents know you are offering this to retailers—the reason being—I’m assuming Pandora independents are carrying the entire line, and if they are totally independent are they setting their own margins?

Of those of you independent retailers carrying Pandora—do you know the prices at solitaire Pandora stores? I’m wondering if independents will now have to compete on price with independents that only carry Pandora? Those independents choosing to open Pandora stores—if they are totally independent and don’t have to pay franchise costs then are they able to set their own margins?

I know of some Pandora reps that own retail stores but are reps outside of their states in which they own retail stores, i think it doesn't hurt independent retailers of Pandora besides the fact they probably can get merchandise quicker and for less money. This is an assumption but from dealing with designer lines, reps seem to hold more weight than they are willing to admit.

To answer your questions, these stores are independently owned and not a franchise. They do not have to contribute any of their profits to Pandora. There are no franchise fees. They purchase the product at wholesale as do all our retailers. The suggested retail prices are the same among all Pandora retailers. These retailers opening a concept store are subject to certain licensing agreements, in which there is no fee, however specific regulations they must comply with to use our name. There are also specific operating procedures these reatailers comply with - but again they are paying no franchise type fees to Pandora at all.

Historically, any time a branded store opens up, other retailers carrying that brand in the area usually see their sales increase, not decrease, after the company store (or whatever permutation thereof) opens up.
The reason is because it gives the brand more visibility and reinforces the brand vision in an area much larger than a multi-brand retailer can devote to it. This phenomenon has held true across a multitude of categories, from sneakers to electronics to shoes to jewelry.

Hedda, you sound like the paid mouthpiece of the designer brands. Prove the historical phenomena of retailer’s sales improving because a brand opens their own store. The one thing that is certain to improve is the gross margin the wholesaler or mining company (DeBeers) is able to make.

Ask a retailer who used to sell Tiffany what the impact was on their business when Tiffany pulled the line and later opened up in market they helped build.

Do the current David Yurman retailers feel their sales are improving with the opening of David Yurman boutiques? Is David Yurman simply grabbing the retail margin in addition to their wholesale margin?

Hedda, Hedda, Just where did you learn retail..Does Chevrolet sell new Fords, with Ford across the street NO. When a major brand opens up in direct competition with their customers, i know this is unethical. Case in point Movado close out stores competing with their customers...BAD BAD..First thing i did when i owned a retail store and had wholsalers sell to the public, i would close my account with them. Most of those wholesalers are gone now, because they were greedy and cut their throats in the industry.Either you are wholesale or you are retail, you cannot walk both sides of the street.

I have been a Pandora dealer for 3 years. Since they have gone to the concept of store in store partnerships they are edging out the small retailers who have built their business. All retailers are now required to carry their whole line, not just the bracelets and charms. I can say the bracelets and charms sell the rest is garbage that does not sell and takes up precious retail space.

It seems to me what Pandora wants is to just have stores that carry only their line. Eventually all dealers who carry other lines will be dropped. The way they are headed you are a Pandora dealer period.

Pandora is currently going to retailers and telling them they have to stop selling successful lines if they want to carry Pandora. It is unethical.

trust me you do not want to open a pandora store. they piss on the people who have helped them grow their company. They refuse orders to the small accounts who made them what they are today. Without the small stores who got their name out there they would not be the well-known jewelry they are today. Slap in the face.

I agree. They impose so many restrictions in their favor and none in favor of the retailer especially if you are a small retailer.
I carried the line from the beginning and they canceled my account. The small retailer doesn't matter to them. They only want the large jewelry chains.

Don't know about all this other stuff, (did a search for Pandora jewelry to find more pieces) but I found Pandora at a store called Yaya's Boutique in Chicago, and you can buy online at www.shopyayas.com. In-store service was great, so I assume online would be too.

Wow I've been shopping for a Pandora bracelet for months. I believe in karma and I'm putting the brakes on this purchase. I would never want to do business with a company that would take a Royal Poop on the folks who helped them become successful...What A Turn Off!

I just can't support any business that would conduct themselves in such a way!

What started me on this mission was a seller on etsy.com "

What started me on this mission was a seller on etsy.com "TLBeads" I just loved her work. I contacted her about doing some that I could mix and match my Turquoise and brown outfits.

She was fantastic! I emailed her photos of what I was looking for. She in turn emailed me pictures / choices while she was making them.

These are custom built beads to my specifications for under $20.00 per bead.

I wanted to add a bunch of the silver beads in between from Pandora, but after reading this there is no way in creation I will do business with Pandora!

I also carried Pandora for 3 years after being begged by the Australian importer to do so.No one knew about Pandora, I spent every spare cent on advertising. When they realised I was selling $30,00 worth of beads a month in a tiny store they worked out that if they took it off me and gave it to someone in the larger shopping centre they would make more money.I know of girls losing their homes from Pandora's unethical treatment. Shame on you PANDORA

I agree with Dragon, it's obvious that Pandora is using the 80/20 rule... 80% of their business comes from 20% of their existing dealers, if the accounts above are in the 80% and did not want to step up to the plate and be part of the 20% than "shame on them" they can take a good line and through it away because they did not want grow? they deserve to be closed.

Pandora kick us out for not selling Pandora exclusively. Deadline was given to remove our other lines such as Lenox and Jim Shores or else. They lost a big buyer. I was purchasing over $40,000 of Pandora each month! Now I know the reason. They now think they can make more money having Jared as their retailer. Good luck Pandora!

I was also a large buyer of Pandora, because I voiced my opinion they took the line from me. I was one of there first suppliers. I have a beautiful store and had 2000 customers. I have gradually lost alot of them because of the backorders. I now have Troll beads and I am hoping I can convert some customers or make new customers. Troll beads are great because they have a universal bracelet that fits all beads. Lots of beautiful glass beads.

I was doing research on how to become a Pandora dealer when I came accross this site. Any company that treats loyal business owners the way they have is not a company I wish to be associated with. I was also going to start my own bracelet for Mothers Day this year. I will come up with another gift request!!!

I am speaking with an attorney about a class action law suit against pandora. I will be running an ad in the trade magazines, and if anyone is interested, please let me know, when the ad comes out. They opened up about 7 stores within 5 miles from me, when I was told by Knud that there would be a 12 mile buffer. I started to run in-store promotions to my clients, and a new dealer squealled on me, and they pulled the line. I have been a dealer of just the beads, and not the rest of the line for 5.5 years, and they just cancelled my account. Lets all join together.

To all of you that sells the Pandora line.. or used to.. i recently contacted a rep of Pandora... i was told that the minimum inveastment investment to be able to carry their line and become a dealer was 100k?
I was also told that they already have 20 dealers selling Pandora online and won't accept more ?

Anyhow did you all invested 100k to carry their line? That is a lot isn't it for a minimum order especially when you start ?
Your comments would be appreciated..thanks !

No, class action is not the only answer. As an American citizen, you have the right, no obligation, to report such violations of fair trade practices to a little old part of the government called The Federal Trade Commission.Pandora is in direct violation of at least 3 Statutes, and probably many more.If you are inclined,go to the FTC site and see how easy it is to file a complaint.Pandora was also slapped by Australian Trade comm, on only 1 complaint.Stop wining and do something about it!

Former Chamilia Employee commented:

I would not advise going with Chamilia, I am a former employee. They treat thier personell horribly. The head designer Killian Rieder outright steals other peoples bead designs including from Pandora.

Also thier manufacturing is awful, they are consistantly loosing gems stones and all the people on the design and production team do not know the difference between cubic zirconia and swarvoski.

Killian the designer can not even pronounce swarovski.

Chamilia has also had people in the UK build up the brand there and then cut them off from ordering. Stealing all of their cliental.
