A Lose/Lose Proposition
January 22, 2008
Do you find that you consistently hang on to employees too long when in your heart you really know they would be better off somewhere else? You are not alone. Countless businesses have suffered and many continue to suffer out of fear.
For many, the fear stems from their belief they will not be able to find a better replacement and therefore, feel it is best to settle for the current employee. For whatever reason, some business owners would rather “die from a thousand cuts” by putting up with lackluster performance and cultural incompatibility for an extended period of time versus making a decision to part company with the employee. The truth of the matter is you are doing a disservice to your employee and yourself. Your business is not as productive as it could be and you are also making a statement to the other employees that job and behavioral performance are subjective. This could also negatively impact employee morale within your organization.
Whatever industry you are in whether it is construction, automobile or some other industry never forget you are in the people business. You are only as good as the people in your organization. Therefore, consider following the advice of Dave Anderson, a well respected business consultant and author, “hire slow and fire fast.” It is in the best interest of you, your business and your soon-to-be ex-employee.
