Do You Have What It Takes (Part II: Strength & Intensity)
August 2, 2007

Let’s continue to explore the acronym DESIRE as a follow up to my prior post regarding “the secret” to achieving succession. Today, I will focus on strength and intensity.

Seeking succession is easier said than done. There are a multitude of issues to address not the least of which is dealing with employed family members. All too often I witness various forms of entitlement which is neither beneficial to the business nor beneficial to the employed family member’s self worth and personal fulfillment. In some instances, employed family members are harboring frustration and resentment toward parents and or siblings for things that happened in the past. Needless to say, both of the above issues can be quite difficult not only to address but also to resolve. In these instances, strength and inner fortitude is required. While it is natural to want to leave these potential bomb shells alone, it is incumbent upon the leader/parents to confront difficult issues head on. Bottom Line: Possessing inner strength to hold family members accountable and exhibit tough love are clearly in the long term best interest of employed family members.

Intensity… For those of you who are football fans, one of the best examples of intensity I have ever witnessed is Mike Singletary, a linebacker who played for the Chicago Bears in the mid to late eighties. If you have seen Mike play or watched any films of when he played, you know what I am talking about. He exhibited a level of intensity and focus on every play. He took nothing for granted. This intensity and focus eventually helped Mike become a Hall of Fame player. You may be saying to yourself,

What in the world does Mike Singletary have to do with succession planning?

Great question! As my colleagues and I have stated in the past, succession planning is a subject which many business owners procrastinate. For those of you who have begun the process, it is important that you maintain the intensity and focus as there will always be changing circumstances that need to be addressed. Furthermore, as leaders of your business, every move you make is being watched by your managers and employees. And as you have heard before, “Attitude is Contagious!” Wouldn’t it be great to have a business environment full of people with intensity and focus? Imagine what you could do!
