Dear Ricci – I believe in facing my fears but how do I get past failure?
June 23, 2008

Dear Ricci:
All my life I have been taught... face your fears, you won't know unless you try, you can be anything you want to be, don't let fear stand in your way... all the fearful things you mentioned...fear of loss, humiliation or rejection, pain, or financial ruin. I say to myself, "See, you should have never tried. All your fears became reality."

I read about it being OK to fail, but I never thought it would feel THIS devastating. I am certainly not able to let it roll off my back just yet. Now, I am in a place where I feel that my "safe place" felt much better than my "failure place."

So, when one does fail... what's the recovery process? Is there one? I assume it's personalized to each experience. J.D.

Dear JD:
The encouragement I have to share is that you are fulfilling the first step in being able to innovate your next “What.” You feel you are at the bottom – but what you are really experiencing is complete honesty with the realityof your actions versus the mythology of the dream.

The next step is not how to get back to the previous vision or dream, but to take time to see where your emotional, physical, financial and spiritual needs are urging you forward. This does not negate past accomplishments, orwhat you have learned, it means taking a fresh look at where you currently are now.   As Dr. Wayne Dyer has said, getting comfortable with being “nowhere – which is really being NOW HERE.” It is at this place that your mind becomes clear of the fog and miracles of vision, “coincidental” meetings and opportunities become apparent to you. They are actually all around you all of the time; however, you may have been blinded to them as you were looking through the selective filter of your previous vision.

I know this is a very hard and painful place to be – it is only through this baptism of fire that the phoenix of the next can emerge. You are not alone. One thing you can be certain is, whether you are ready or not, change is on it’s way. It is preferable to be the cause of the timing, rather than at its’ effect. However, if you procrastinate or pretend it isn’t happening, it is inevitable outside forces will eventually force a change. Make sure it’s the change you desire rather than leaving it to the vagaries of chance.
