Baby Boomer Contributions - Dear Ricci
September 17, 2008

As a member of the Baby Boomer generation, I am often asked about my perspective in regards to my business views . . .

Dear Ricci,

In your opinion, what are the three greatest contributions the Baby Boomer Generation has made to the business world?

  1. First is a more holistic approach in defining ourselves and what “success” means to each of us. Our generation took a longer time to discover who we are and what we wanted to achieve. Our generation had the blessing of growing up in a peaceful world and economic prosperity. We had the ability to explore philosophies, cultures, and lifestyles. We did not buy into the old paradigm that, in order to be successful, we had to choose between business and family – but knew we could have it all if we wanted it. Fifty-five isn’t old, we are just in our prime because we have invested in being complete human beings – physically fit, spiritually awake, mentally stimulated and socially connected.
  2. We have defied stereotyping: Women of my generation broke through the numerous “ceilings” and now have reached the highest levels of equality in the workplace and getting paid equally for it. With this achievement, we are experiencing the blending of compassionate, collaborative leadership styles (feminine) with the typically more aggressive and independent style previously mandated for success (masculine). The combination of these two styles is greater than either one alone (Yin/Yang).
  3. New business paradigms: One example - by transforming the workforce from employees who punch a time clock to associates who are incentivized as a team to work collaboratively, inspiring & challenging others to think in flexible and creative ways, businesses are achieving and exceeding previous standards of success and productivity.
