Will Toner Survive the Mail Stream? Part 1

January 10, 2009 I've talked a lot in this blog about toner-based digital printing and the dramatic impact it can have on the marketing programs of small and mid-sized businesses. But one of the historic concerns about toner-based printing has been its ability to survive the mail stream. Won't toner scratch and flake off more easily than offset? According to a new research study, the answer — surprisingly—is no.

I ran across the study when updating my marketer's primer / training & educational tool "Digital Printing: Transforming Business and Marketing Models." I was talking to Julie Shaffer, who runs the PIA/GATF Digital Printing Council, and she told me about a survey the DPC has just conducted on the survivability of toner-based printing in the mail stream.

Conventional wisdom is that digitally printed products do not fare as well as offset printed products when being run through the postal sorters and other machines run by the United States Postal Service. The DPC study, however, thwarts this conventional wisdom.

In a carefully controlled comparison involving output from six digital press models and a traditional offset press, the study found that digitally printed postcards fared better in the mail stream than cards printed using traditional offset.

According to the study:
  • The percentage of tears was roughly equivalent between digital and offset produced mailers;
  • The percentage of digital mailers with the lowest level of damage was nearly four times higher for digital than for offset —11.3% for digital compared to 3.8% for offset;
  • The percentage of digital mailers with the highest level of damage was more than three times lower for digital —7.2% compared to 25.3% for offset.
So if you've been hestitant about using digital printing for your direct mail projects based on concerns about the "toughness" of toner, fear not!

Toner will smear if not printed on the appropriate paper surface, unlike ink. I send out many cards which I print on my printer, which uses toner, not ink. I was cued in to this when one of my cards was returned. There was so much smear on the inside of the card from being run through the postal equipment that you could barely read what I had written. I was so embarrassed when I realized how this had been presenting to my customers!

Hi, Barbara.

When I talk about digital printing in this blog, I am talking about digital production presses — the kind that you find in a commercial print shop. The toners used for consumer or small home/office business use are not designed to withstand the print stream. In these cases, these data would not apply. But, again, all of my posts refer to professional digital production presses. But great point — it's important to note that there is a distinction here. Thanks!
