Creating a Construction Website: Keywords for Search Engine Optimization
February 18, 2008

Although you can direct potential customers to your website; the best way to increase your potential profit margin is to ensure your website receives a high rank with the search engines. There are a few important steps you must follow to increase your websites page rank. Remember, if potential customers can not find you on a search engine, you don’t exist.

The first and most important step towards search engine optimization is developing a table of keywords. Keywords are used throughout the content of your website and will bring targeted traffic to your website from search engines. Developing a table of keywords can take some time, but can make all the difference in your potential customers finding you or not.

Here are some steps you can follow to develop a table of keywords for you website;

  1. Write down all the words and phrases you think potential customers would search for to find you.
    1. Do not limit yourself to single words, most people search using multiple words.
    2. Look at the website from the visitors eye, what would you search to find your companies services?
  2. Create a spreadsheet with three columns. The first column should be named Keyword. The second column should be named Keyword Effectiveness Index (KEI), and the third column should be named Info. Place all the words and phrases you came up with in step one, in the Keyword column. Use a new row for each word or phrase.
  3. Go to WORDTRACKER and start the trial. Wordtracker is a website that will help you determine which keywords are the best for search engine optimization.
  4. Once you begin the Trial, type in your first word and click proceed. Wordtracker will display a list of keywords related to the word you typed in. Click on the first word that is relevant to your website.
  5. Now Wordtracker will open a new window showing a list of keywords or phrases containing the word you clicked on, and the number of times they have been used by searchers. Add relevant words to your basket by clicking on them. Continue doing this until you have completed your list of keywords and the lists Wordtracker provides for your keywords. In the trial version of Wordtracker you can only have 30 words in your basket, so you may need to proceed to step six for those words then return to steps 4 & 5 to complete going through your lists.
  6. Now that you have completed going through the lists, take a look at your basket. In this basket it should give your keywords and their attributes. The attribute you need to look for it the KEI Analysis. The KEI Analysis searches the keywords you picked and ranks their effectiveness by how many sites are available for that keyword. You do not want keywords with a KEI under 10 because that means there are many websites that come up for that keyword, giving your website less chance to make top rankings. Write down all the words that have a KEI over 10.
  7. Delete all the words you wrote in the Keyword column of your spreadsheet and add all the keywords you wrote down from Wordtracker.
  8. Go to Google.com and type in your first keyword. Make sure to add quotation marks to surround the word or phrase to ensure you receive and exact match search.
  9. Read the listings for the top 10 or 20 sites. You can also visit these sites and make notes about the site in the Info column on your spreadsheet. Continue this step for each of your words. Reviewing sites that come up from your search can help you with ideas for your own website concept. As well, these sites could help you think of more words to add to your keyword list.

This list of keywords will be used during the Writing Content portion of this series. Ensuring you have your keywords positioned properly within the text of your website can increase your search engine optimization greatly. To search engines websites are more than just a bunch of words. Search engines look at what specific words are in your website and judge how relevant they are to the searcher.

Another way to increase your search engine optimization is to include Meta Tags in your website. Meta Tags are not viewed by your visitors, but if you view the source code for a website you will see the tags. These tags are placed on websites strictly to increase search engine optimization. BuildWebsite4U has an amazing description of the different kinds of Meta Tags and how each one can help you with your search engine optimization.
