Creating a Construction Website: Site Structure
February 15, 2008

The site structure of your website is not the layout. It is not how the website will look, but how viewers will navigate through the website. Consider the Site Structure like the Blueprints of a building.

A well-organized webpage is easy for visitors. The easier your website is to use, the longer visitors will stay and the more interested they will be in your company.

Websites are designed in Tiers. Tier One is your Homepage. Tier Two would be the pages linked from your Homepage and Tier Three would be the pages linked from Tier Two. A Three Tier website is best to use for Search Engine Optimization.

Here is an example of Tier Organization.

Tier One ---------------> Homepage

Tier Two ---------------> Portfolio Page, Contact Page, Company Description Page

Tier Three---------------> Specific Jobsites, Quote Requests, Specific Types of Construction your company completes.

Make sure you link Tier Two back to Tier One, and Tier Three back to Tier Two so your website is easy to navigate. Although a Three Tier website is the most commonly used, you can use only two Tiers or more than three Tiers if you like.

Organizing can be a difficult process. Here are a few tips and tricks that could help you organize your website.

  • Think about the website as if you were entering a house. The Homepage would be the front door. Which way would you like your guests to travel through the house?
  • Try to keep the most important information in the Tier Two section. Tier two pages are the first place a customer will travel because they are linked from your Homepage.
  • Try using blank sheets of paper as your web pages. Write down on one sheet what your Homepage will contain. Continue to write on a new sheet of paper for each page you would like to create. Then lay all the papers out on a table and see if they make sense. Does the information flow from the home page through to the Tier Three pages? Or do you need to jump from the Homepage to a Tier Three page for the most important information?
