What image is you advertising projecting to your customers? What image do the salespeople project to the public? Are the images advertised the sales images delivered? Far too often in business the image that a company is trying to convey via their advertising message is totally different than the image that the business conveys in live customer to employee situations.

Many of the big box stores advertise knowledgeable, friendly and attentive sales staffs only to completely fail when it comes to the service given on the sales floor. Car dealers offer huge discounts or low monthly payments through their advertising only to find that only one or two percent of the public would qualify for the special discounts or low interest payments. Car Rental companies advertise ease in processing only to have the customer get hung up at the rental counter due to incompetent counter people. Airlines advertise on time departure and arrival only to find the next few flights taken are late in arriving and/or departing.

Salespeople should operate under the umbrella of being a direct and essential representative of the advertising and marketing program that a business projects. The advertising may be the first indirect impression that a potential customer has of a business but the salespeople are the first direct impression. In many cases the customer may decide to buy based on the first few minutes of contact with the salespeople. Customers will make a conscious or subconscious decision of whether they will ever return to a business based on the impression that the salespeople make with the customer. While all business generally promote a positive, customer service driven image in their advertising very few live up to the expectation when direct contact is made. The difference between a simple, nothing special buy/sell relationship and a WOW experience on the part of the customer is in the impression and image that the salesperson projects and leaves in the customers mind. Only through living up to the image that the advertising projects will a business grow to reach its full potential.

First impressions set the stage; last impressions close the curtains!
