It only takes a second!
August 1, 2008
It doesn’t take but a second to separate your self from, what seems like, the majority of people in the sales and service industries. As a matter of fact it probably doesn’t take any more time to just be nice than it does to be average. I assure you the time it takes to be nice will make all the difference in the world in the feelings that people leave with.
I was recently on a long flight where the flight attendants didn’t seem to be any happier about being there than I was. The attendants weren’t necessarily rude they were just there. They served the drinks, served the meal, not many smiles, and absolutely no personal interaction. In reality they were just fixtures of the airplane. Yet, on another short flight I had recently, I met a very warm and personable flight attendant. When I got on the plane she said,” Hello, how are you today?” She went on to introduce herself by saying, “ My name is Shannon what’s yours?” I introduced myself at that point and took my seat. She then stated that she would be happy to get me something to drink as soon as we take off and if there is anything she can do to let her know. Basically, she was just being a warm friendly person who appeared to enjoy her job and at the very least makes the flight more pleasant for everyone involved. Prior to take-off I dosed off and never got the drink, I would guess that she didn’t want to disturb me. After a short time I woke up and noticed she had put a pillow in my lap. Great extra effort that took no more time than it would have to ignore me.
It doesn’t take any more time to be pleasant, warm, friendly and caring than it does to be melancholy. However, the difference it will make in the customers mind is dramatic. Make dealing with you a pleasant experience and customers will proactively come back to you. Be just average and you really don’t know if they will come back or not. Being nice just might make more sales for you and cause your company to be a more pleasant place to work and buy.
