A Parachute is Like a Brain
January 18, 2008
A parachute is like a brain in that it only works when it is completely open. A closed parachute does you absolutely no good when you are free falling through the sky. It is an open parachute that will mean the difference between a successful jump and ____, well you get the picture. Can’t the same thing be said about the brain? An open mind will be the difference between a successful endeavor and a failed attempt.
When your mind is open you are willing and able to learn new things, to experiment with new ideas or techniques and to learn and grow. It is the narrow or closed-minded individual that becomes complacent. When complacency sets in, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to turn things around. This is what could be called “burn-out”. There is no greater enemy to a salesperson, or anybody for that matter, than complacency or closed mindedness.
With all the changes, technological advances, new information, and access to these tools that is becoming available a person that doesn’t, or will not, take advantage of these valuable tools is foolish. Look around at other companies. Look at, read, and study the trade journals. Shop other companies or stores that aren’t necessarily in your industry to see what other segments of your field are doing. Get up to speed on the Internet and the wealth of information available to you in your industry. No one can afford to sit back and wait for ideas and knowledge to come to them. You have to go out and aggressively pursue the knowledge that is available at your fingertips.
An open-mind will grow and flourish. A closed mind, like a closed parachute is heading for disaster. I encourage you to pull the ripcord on your brain and avoid a freefall into the future. From up here the opportunities are endless, it all depends on your and your willingness to learn and grow.
