Where's The Money?

June 12, 2009

Recently I had the opportunity to meet a young part-time salesperson. This person is working in a retail store through high school to make some extra money and to help her decide what career path she should take. Through our conversation this person asked me an interesting question. The question was:

“Where do I think the opportunity is to make money or what occupation do I think is going to offer the best opportunity for her to live a fruitful life?

When you really think about it there is no one answer. I know many people who don’t, or haven’t, fulfilled the opportunity that they have been given. I know others who seem to have been born with a silver spoon. The type of people that no matter what they do they are successful. There are others that have to work very hard at success and are never satisfied with the level of success that they have achieved. Then there are other people who just coast along and leave their life hand to mouth. Every one of us is different with varying goals, expectations and dreams.

The only common denominator that I can think of for anyone looking for where the money is comes in three words. The words being:

Knowledge, Self-determinism & Passion.

No matter what profession a person chooses to pursue if they possess a passion for the business, have the self-determinism to not settle for average results and constantly seek knowledge, and then applies the knowledge, any profession can reap the rewards of a fruitful, successful professional life.

The sales profession is no different. Salespeople can be the lowest paid people or the highest paid people. The choice is yours to make!
