Adversity doesn't build character - it's reveals character!

November 26, 2008

Reading the papers and watching the news is getting dangerous. You would think that the world was coming to an end. Yes, it is very tough out there. Traffic is down, people are scared, major lay-offs are a reality. The majority of vendors were singing the blues; retails are wondering what the future would hold. Buyers are resistant to spending any money on inventory. Yet a few vendors are having their best year ever; some retailers are talking about how they were enjoying sizeable sales increases.

To sum it up I would say that everyone expects adversity in the coming weeks and months. This is the time when the true professionals can and should shine. The title of this week’s blog is “Adversity doesn’t build character, it reveals it!” The question is what is your character? When times are a little tough are you proactively seeking ways to turn around the business? Have you looked at your Customer Service Program to look for areas where you can improve? Are you doing everything in your power to drive customers in the door? Are you sending thank you notes, making telephone calls, and asking for referrals? Are you working harder than ever before at building a lasting relationship with your customers? Are you really listening to your customers to hear what they are saying, both verbally and non-verbally? Are you selling yourself and your company at least two or three times during a sales presentation?

All vital questions that each and every salesperson should ask themselves. No one can afford to sit back and wait for things to happen, professionals make things happen? Some people dream of success… while others wake up and work hard at it. While adversity won’t build your character, the character within you will build your future.
