Peeve of the Week: Surprise TerminationsJune 26, 2009 It’s one of the “uncoolest” things companies do in the workplace when they fire someone for performance issues without giving him or her any preliminary information leading up to it. I’m always surprised when I hear of cases where a company plans to fire an employee because it is not satisfied with that employee’s performance, but also has not told the employee that there were problems in the first place. It makes no sense. Why not just let the person know what needs to improve and then terminate if there is no response to the feedback? At least it gives the employee a chance. Otherwise, the truth is that the performance problem also lies with the person who can’t have the conversation and instead fast forwards to letting someone go out of the clear blue sky.

In response to: Peeve of the Week: Surprise Terminations Donna commented: In some ways yes and in some ways no, because, if that were the case, then fear would also prevent the termination. I do agree, indeed quiet does result from fear. And absolutely, it is a lack of communication.

In response to: Peeve of the Week: Surprise Terminations Zed commented: Yes, but at least with termination there are laws. There are no laws, in the more subtle area of behavior. The fear comes from not knowing the reactions of those asked to "behave properly." The only fears with termination, are lawsuits and tantrum's while being escorted out of the building. No water cooler backstabbing at that point.

In response to: Peeve of the Week: Surprise Terminations Brian commented: Worse yet are mid-level managers that look for any reason to terminate their company loyal, high seniority, higher paid employees just to make their labor numbers and thereby themselves look good. Those companies will always end up with nothing but low paid, inexperienced people who, having witnessed the surprise terminations, have no company loyalty.
