Peeve of the Week: Lack of Clarity
August 26, 2008

I understand that everyone can't be clear about all things at all times.  Certainly, managers are no exception.  However, if you are going to tag an assignment as “important,” “imperative” “crucial” and “URGENT!” then a qualifier such as a deadline needs to be attached.  That’s what happened this week.  I watched a manager press her staff for urgency, and not just once.  She emphasized and reiterated how critical it was that a project move at lightening speed.  But no one knew what that meant.  Time is understood differently by different people.  It’s relative and it’s subjective.  So remember to add the “due by date,” when you need something done “ASAP.”  It will make life a lot easier and less stressed for everyone involved.
