So Many Books, Too Little Time: What To Read
February 13, 2008
I don't t think we will be facing a shortage in books to read about business any time soon. In fact there are so many out there that it's hard to know which ones are worth the time and that actaully offer something new and innovative. The biggest frustration I hear about the literature coming out these days is that it seems to have all been done and said before, that concepts are just being spun differently and regurgitated. And in the rare cases that something fresh does hit the shelves, it is often not practical or executable in the day-in and day-out applications of work.
But there is an exception. Blue Ocean Strategy by W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne is one of the best books about business that I've come across in a long, long time. The authors explain that when you focus on the competition and allow “what the other guy is doing" to drive your actions, it is easy to lose sight of what differentiates you from your competitors in the marketplace. The point being that if you define yourself and remain true to your own point of difference, and create a strategy that supports and reinforces that uniqueness, it really doesn’t matter what anyone else is doing. I highly recommend it.
