Peeve of the Week: SIC Codes

January 2, 2009 I find it really hard to understand.  On occasion, when I need to fill something out that asks me for my SIC Code, I’m left having to choose either management or marketing or HR, or sales, or training… consultant as my business classification.  But here’s what I don’t get.   Why are they all so separate?   In business, you can’t have one without the other.  In fact, in my mind’s eye, they are all variations on the same theme.

You have the words that make up your core messages.  You have the images that  represent your brand.  You have management that is hopefully adept at equally developing the full potential of both the company’s people and products.  The words and images make the copy, create the position, train the employees and sell to the end user.  Internal marketing links directly to external branding.  Employees link directly customers.  When are we going to realize that all our  front  of the house functions are essentially doing the same thing?

Position, communicate, educate, market, brand and sell.  That’s it.
