Peeve of the Week: Victimology

August 20, 2008 What is it about certain people that make them think they are subjected to the world’s injustices more so than the next guy?  Granted, it’s true.  Some have it harder than others and some do have it easier.  But the kicker is that it’s usually the latter who do all the complaining.  In the end though, don’t they see?  They are the ones missing out on their own lives by droning on and on and on.  All we have to do is to tune them out...when we can, that is.  In the workplace however, it’s a little different.  Self-proclaimed victims are a problem, and ignoring them only exacerbates their negative effect on other people and the business itself.  Whether it’s two or twenty, these folks will suck the life right out of an organization, not to mention lower morale, divert focus and distract attention away from the more relevant business matters at hand.  So rather than making pretend you can’t hear them, the best bet is to politely ask them to stop finding fault with everything and/or everyone and complaining about how life’s not fair.  If they don’t, or they can’t, they need to go.  They’re just not worth the cost.
