Going Viral 2.0: Facebook Week Two
August 17, 2008

Well, I wish I had better news to report.  Or I guess I should say more progress.  Since my last Facebook post, I’ve gone from having 18 to 21 friends on Facebook.  I know, not very impressive.   I guess my fundamental challenge at this point is finding the time to invest.  Let’s face it, relationships, like businesses grow best when there are both strategic and organic components at play.  Facebook is no different.  And what with the amount of time I already spend sitting at my computer, I’m hard-pressed to allocate more in order to really make it count.  Little by little however, I suspect I’ll get there.

Now aside from my current lack of dedication, resources and time, I will say that I am detecting a whiff of weirdness around the whole “friend finder” thing.  I think we have people out there keeping count, which I find really odd and very high school.  I’m told they are “friend collectors.”  The fact that they already have a name is frightening in itself.  I have literally heard grown adults brag about how many “friends” they have acquired on Facebook.  It’s rather scary to think that being popular could still have the meaning that it did at a time when being popular made sense.  It was part of the natural pubescent order of things.  But now? As adults?  Who cares?  So when I hear someone say, “I have 1569 “friends” with the pride and sense of accomplishment that a parent brings to announcing that his or her child just got into Yale, I have to wonder.  What’s wrong with this picture?
