New Year’s Resolutions: The Only One You’ll Ever Need

December 31, 2007

I could never fully get my head around the idea of New Year’s resolutions and I wasn’t sure why. All I knew was that I never had any, and found myself awkwardly trying to explain why not every time someone asked. Then, one day I finally realized that I had basic philosophical differences with the tradition of starting anew at the beginning of each year, especially when most resolutions tend to repeat themselves tirelessly for decades. My conflict is that I don't understand having a goal or wanting to change something and waiting until January 1st to make it happen.

Let’s say you decide that your resolution is going to be that you will never wait until resolution time again to do what you want or need to do.  Then you can expect to be met with the same continuity, accomplishment and productivity of those people in life who know how to get things done… and do. No more stop-start. No more lost time. No more missed opportunities. No more lethargy, procrastination, and getting nowhere.  And most of all, no more meeting yourself at the same place and same time next year.

So, this year, why not plan not to wait to act and resolve each year hereafter that you will renew your commitment to “just do it?”   It’s the only resolution you’ll ever need to make.
