Termination With Cause: A Hair Cut?
June 12, 2008

Who would ever have thought that a new haircut could get you fired?  Well, it happened to a woman in Canada.  Stacey Fearnall cut off her long red locks for a cancer charity and was told that she didn’t have a job when she returned to work with her newly shaven head.

People are crying foul.  Some are screaming gender discrimination.  My guess is that they are probably right, becasue men don't get fired for being bald.  Others simply don’t think it’s right.  Then there are those like myself who just don’t get it.  What was it about having short hair that made her no longer a suitable waitress?  As far as I know, long hair is not a bona fide occupational qualification (BFOQ) of waitressing.

But the best was that the employer, Mr. Hillard said, “This is an employer-employee matter and such matters are not to be dealt with in the public.”  Uh huh.  As if the law provides him the equivalent of spousal privilege.  There is no such thing as a private employer/employee matter as he would like to think.  If you pull a stunt like that, you deserve to be “outed.”

We all should be outraged at this type of mistreatment of an employee!! We have a right NOT to do business with places like these.

Agreed. I would love to get this guy's answer specifically as to why and what he was thinking. I bet the answer will be as shocking as that fact that it happened in the first place. Perhaps even more so.

Mr. Hillard needs to learn a thing or two about karma. Not that I'd ever wish cancer on anyone, but odds are someone that he knows and loves will be affected by it at some point. It's the support of people like Ms. Fearnall that will hopefully one day help us find a cure. Until then, she's welcome to come work with me anytime.

This story reminds me of a TV show called "Felicity" where the actor/character also cut her lovely locks. It caused a huge fuss amongst viewers and the ratings dropped. Can something as benign as hair really have THAT much impact on others?

Shouldn't all wait staff be required to shave their hair? But than there would be fewer suprises on the plate, and diners would have to actually converse.

Shining a light on this incident also helps the millions of men, women and children who lose their hair to autoimmune conditions like alopecia areata.Bald Girls Do Lunch Inc specifically helps women across the country by meeting intentionally in public restaurants. The group's fun and highly effective support and strategy sessions mainstream public awareness and acceptance about female baldness. When bald women choosing to leave their wigs at home are as readily accepted as bald men, there will be fewer incidents like this. Advice to Mr. Hillard: what a public relations coup if you ask Bald Girls to Do Lunch at your place.
