Peeve of the Week: Baby Talk

September 10, 2008 It’s been a long, long time since I’ve heard the non-baby version of baby talk – you know, the kind that adults use when it is totally inappropriate.   I’d also forgotten how much it got on my nerves.   It happened while on a flight this week.  One of the stewardesses not only spoke to everyone on the plane in a high-pitched, squeaky baby voice, she also called them by baby names such as, sweetie, baby doll, darlin’, sugar, honey, sweet cheeks, buttercup, and…well, you get the point.  Talk about a ride in “The Friendly Skies!”  There is such a thing though, as too friendly.  Frankly, I felt like I was traveling in a parallel universe, and it wasn’t necessarily a pleasant one.

I thought about my own company and the fact that if any of our employees spoke to a customer like that I’d want to die.  I don’t know, can you institute a new policy in the employee handbook that adds a "no baby talk" clause?  Then watch, I can just see it coming now.  Keeping in step with our litigious society, someone would no doubt step forward and say that the company policy is violating his/her rights!  Ugh.  Sometimes I wish we could start over.
