Firing Employees Who Are Hurting Your Business

Dan Blank -- Expert Business Source, 4/16/2007 11:50:00 AM

Bnet shares advice on firing employees who are holding your company back:

  • Treat dismissal as an option of last resort.
Make sure the employee has been given ample opportunities to succeed.
  • Endure pain now to enjoy benefits later.
Get over your guilt. Accept that you're doing the right thing and start preparing for the change.
  • Set a time, date, and place.
Map out a strategy to make the event as painless as possible.
  • Keep it quick and clear.
Be direct and don't let ambiguity creep into the conversation.
  • Let the rest of your team know.
Lay the groundwork for a smooth transition among the workers who remain.

They also list the three common mistakes when firing and employee:

  1. Don't talk about yourself.
  2. Don't sugarcoat.
  3. Don't defend yourself.

You can find details on Bnet.com.
